Honoring Alive Richard: A Legacy of Kindness & Leadership On May 11, 2012, the Academy of the Redwoods lost one of its own. Alive Richard, a dedicated 2nd-year student, passed away unexpectedly, leaving our community heartbroken. Alive was a shining light—never missing a day of school, always eager to learn, and welcoming to all. His infectious smile, kindness, and leadership inspired everyone around him. To honor his memory, the AR staff created the Alive Richard Scholarship, awarded annually to graduating students who embody his spirit—compassion, leadership, and a commitment to community. Over the past nine years, we’ve continued this tradition, recognizing students who: ✨ Advocate for the AR community with kindness and inclusivity ✨ Lead with confidence, fairness, and courage ✨ Build meaningful connections with both peers and mentors Recipients must also have a 2.0+ GPA, plan to attend college, and financial need. The scholarship awards one $1,000 or two $500 scholarships each year. 💙 How You Can Help 💙 Donations can be made at hafoundation.org/aliverichard. Checks can be made payable to HAF or Alive Richard Scholarship and mailed to the address below. Alive Richard Scholarship ℅ Humboldt Area Foundation 363 Indianola Road, Bayside CA 95524 Every contribution keeps Alive’s legacy alive, helping future students thrive. Thank you for your support! 🙏 #AliveRichardScholarship #HonoringALegacy #ARCommunity

In AR's Biology Class, students completed an advanced Microbiology lab in which they used gene editing technology to transform the green fluorescent protein gene into E. coli bacteria. This lab combined their previous knowledge of protein synthesis and antibiotic resistance with a hands-on, rigorous cell biology lab. Pictures include examples of the transformed E. coli bacteria glowing under a UV light compared with the control of non-glowing E. coli on the left.
